On June 16th 2017 over 60 Internet of Things community members came together in London to revisit our Open Internet of Things Definition of 2012. It’s five years later and we wanted to explore how things have changed. In collaboration with Fox Williams we spent the day shaping the framework for a certification mark which industry and companies can sign up to.

9:00-9:15 Introductions by Usman Haque, Founder of Thingful
9:15-10:00 Keynote plenary.

10:00-13:00 Setting the context (Unconference format)
Any attendee can sign themselves up to speak for a maximum of 30 minutes (including Q&A time) about a theme. There are four themes running concurrently: The Body, The Home, The City, The Planet making it a total of 15 sessions attendees can choose from. A group scribe will capture any key principles of learnings from each theme which we will carry to the afternoon.
13:00-14:30 Lunch
14:30 Working Groups
Attendees can join working groups made up of four themes that apply across the themes explored in the morning. Suggestions based on our 2012 are as follows (this may change on the day):
- Privacy/permissions/entitlement
- Licensing
- Tools
- Access/Time
These groups will work on extrapolating principles which companies should sign up to when registering their product/service for the certification mark. Here again a theme scribe will capture final thoughts from each group to bring back to the Group editing session
There will be coffee/biscuits available all afternoon so we’re able to work without a formal break, but attendees are encouraged to butterfly around the different working groups.
16:00 Group editing of minimum standards and principles for the certification mark
All attendees come together to collaboratively lay down the foundations for the certification mark’s minimum standards and principles. We will also ask attendees who would like to be founding members and support organisations for the administrative body which will manage the mark to come together and establish a schedule of work.
18:00 End of event and move to dinner nearby together.
